Are Your Magazines Making You Sick? Fragrance Ads.

Could it be that the fashionable public is being assaulted with chemicals in their magazines? While nursing a cold at home, one would think that relaxation, perhaps flipping through a magazine, might be a good idea. As I proceeded to do just that, my cold symptoms took a sharp turn for the worse. Within an hour's time, I was coughing worse than I had all day. I couldn't get rid of a "funny" feeling at the back of my throat. Then it occurred to me, that the fragrance ads might be the culprit. So, I ripped them out of each and every magazine, counting no less than eight in total. That's an average of one per magazine, except that one magazine didn't have any. Can you guess which one? Yeah, you would think it would be Oprah, but there was one in there too. Front and center, Nylon, had not a single fragrance ad. I think it is exceptional that they have not given in to that kind of aggressive advertising.
As a side note, I couldn't help noticing that after removal of all fragrance ads, the magazines were easier to flip through. They felt just a little bit more "flexible", honestly.
So from now on, all fragrance ads will be immediately removed from my magazines. I'm sure this is a smart move, even though I couldn't find any official alerts when I tried to research the chemicals in these ads. Not one single alert.

I think Bazzar doesn't do as many Fragrance ads (I hate the heavier pages that flip over!) but Vogue and Elle are definitely "aggressive" when it comes to that.....

I think we have the same camera. But I hate mine. It's a GE...and is the only camera GE has ever made. I'm really good at making smart choices.

And...I hate perfume.

JFK Jean: I take out any bulky pages as well, subscription renewal cards being the worst.

Erin: My camera is a Fuji digital. Cute Hubby is the one who talked me into making a smarter choice. I would have gone for the crappy Sanyo because I really liked the color.
I don't wear perfume anymore. But I love spritzing with rose water, it always makes me feel better.

Ugh, perfume! It makes my eyes water and always smells like old ladies at church. I especially hate it when I'm on the treadmill at the gym and the chick next to me has doused herself before working out.

What I want to know is who are the people buying all those damn celebrity fragrances? Why would anyone pay $40 to smell like Paris Hilton?

I always flip through magazines before reading them and take out all inserts and fragrance ads and discard them before I read the mag.

Definitely, something to keep in mind when going through a magazine. So love the tights!

Thanks for the note. Well, I wasn't sure what to write about, then I looked outside and notice two little girls, 3 going on 23..evidently, from the way they were dressed..ringing this very old old man's doorbell. He's an older gentleman who's daughter comes over to check on him. I'm sure he was just thrilled with them. NOT. And they are always walking up and down the sidewalk. I would be so scared something might happen. Anyway, my Mom always made sure we did everything together. She would go to the park and playground with us when we were little, and we did lots of art to keep us out of trouble at home.

I really hate all of those ads in magazines, but I generally dislike perfume anyway. I prefer a person's natural scent.

Diane, perfume gives me horrible headaches to begin with... I generally won't buy a magazine with those ads because of that. Its like a 'pavlov' type of response now when I look at Vogue or Glamour or Elle - anything with those fragrances. (Even after you rip them out, the scents - especially mixed - brings on a headache.

Pru: I totally agree with you, lending your face to a scent does not a fragrance make. (I'm suddenly feeling like Skywind)

TPT: Good policy, I'm adopting that one.

Cait: Thanks about the tights.
It's scary how many people don't take better care of their children.

Chris: You're like Cute Hubby in that respect. He doesn't even wear deodorant, doesn't need to either.

Ann H: You're right about the Pavlos dog thing. I can think of some other things that trigger the same response time after time.

thanks. I love that song too. Well, I just thought, what would my Dad do? My Mom always said I was the kind who told her everytime..which makes me think of the time I came home from school to report my brother had scratched out the word "penis" on the goal at thd school soccer field. Naturally, my dad said, at least he knew how to spell it. Of course, they were like "how do you know it was him.." & I said, he's the only kid at school who knows how to spell it. My brother fessed up. It was him, but he'd done it months before when it was warm and before the snow fell.

Oldest Daughter was flipping through and Elle magazine just yesterday and I told her to stop it because I could smell the perfume from across the room and it was hurting my nose and making me feel sick(er)! Just yesterday! What a fitting post! I have a super, ridiculous sense of smell anyway but the funny thing is, she'd already ripped them out of the magazine! I could still smell it even though she'd removed them!

Gag me!

They're gross!

Hugs!!

Cait: It's funny that your brother did that, and even funnier that he got caught because he was a good speller.

Tracey: I know, the smell just lingers, it's weird. Gag me is right.
Hope you're feeling better. I'm sick as a dog.

i don't wear perfume and those ads drive me crazy. So do all the subscription cards that fall out. Ugh.

Hope you're feeling better and over that cold soon.

I hear that...I hate fragrance ads....so gross. I don't even let my boyfriend wear calogne because it is too much...I do admit to wearing perfume but I prefer old spice on men.

Tracey: Isn't that cool, it's a riding toy for Babyzilla. Cute Hubby bought it on e-bay.

Dooder City: My father used to wear Old Spice.

IMK: Thanks. I don't twitter, but I'll check out your blog.

i'm with you. i'm allergic to fragrances ads too.

When I was really young, perfume ads with samples were my favourite part of magazines. I just couldn't get enough of them! Now I'm sadly less enthusiastic about such small things in life. It's awful they they're giving you allergic reactions though!

That is very cool! I want one! LOL!! :)

Hope you are feeling better today!

I need a smile today so thought I'd drop by and catch up on your posts :)

I'm afraid I'm a shameless perfume ho (although I wouldn't buy Ms Hilton's on principle) ... but I admit that some magazines overdo the perfume ads and leave me red-eyed and sniffily nosed (I'm sure you can relate to that right now :P). I like finding out what the new scents smell like but they can be rather overpowering.

Hope you're feeling better soon xx

Ps: I LOVE your outfit in that pic!!!

diane said...

miriam: Thanks for the validation.

Isa: I hear you, I used to take them out of the magazines and put them in my sock & undie drawers like sachets.

Tracey: The thought of you riding around on one of those is hysterical. Thanks for the chuckle.

Kate: I like that outfit too, but I had to change into something more comfortable and befitting being sick. Today's snappy outfit consists of the cosiest socks I own, and a huge sweater. They compliment my red nose.

i never thought of this before! i am very sensitive to perfume -- it usually gives me a headache, so i should remove them, too.

diane said...

Drolly: Whoa, did I just provoke thought? cool. Ha! See, you're not the only one who can do that (doing the Chandler dance from Friends).

Am I the only one who likes to 'sniff sniff' the perfume adds? I don't wear perfume everyday, but I do wear it on special occasions. I don't really HATE it, but some people should stop spraying after pressing 1 time.

I just realized something...I'm not sure when you took this photo of all the magazines but I just received my Bazzar in the mail just yesterday. I just hate that subscribers get their issues so late....
